Hazard Identification Study (HAZID)

HAZIDs are all about catching the big picture risks early, before they get locked into design or missed entirely. They’re a structured way to look at potential hazards and see how they could affect your people, your plant, or the wider environment.

Spotting Hazards Before They Happen

We run HAZIDs at early stages of a project or process change, giving your team space to flag concerns and spot the obvious (and not-so-obvious) risks.

Whether it's hydrogen systems or high-pressure steam, we guide these sessions with experience, not just a template.

It's a chance to identify hazards before they become embedded in the design, and fix them while it's still easy to do so.

When should we do a HAZID?

At the earliest possible stage, before detailed design. It’s easier to make changes early than retrofit safety later.

Who needs to be in the room?

A cross-section of your team. Operations, engineering, safety, maintenance, anyone who knows the process and its quirks.

Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP)

HAZOPs are one of our most requested services, and for good reason. They’re a structured deep dive into your process, asking “what if?” at every stage to spot issues before they happen.

Digging Into the Detail of Process Risks

We run HAZOPs with practicality in mind. Yes, there’s a method. But there’s also experience, knowing what to look for, where to dig deeper, and when to ask the tough questions.

HAZOPs aren’t just about compliance. They’re about giving your team clarity on what could go wrong, how likely it is, and what’s in place to deal with it.

Is HAZOP just for new projects?

Not at all. We also run them for plant upgrades, changes in operating conditions, or when your last HAZOP is out of date.

How long does a HAZOP take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the system. We’ll work with you to scope it properly, no time-wasting.

Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)

LOPA helps you answer the question: is what we’ve got in place enough? It’s about understanding the risk behind a scenario and how your safeguards stack up.

Is What You’ve Got Enough? LOPA Helps You Know

We often carry out LOPAs off the back of a HAZOP. Where the risk feels high or there’s uncertainty, LOPA adds structure.

We look at causes, consequences, and the layers in place to stop something serious happening.

It’s about evidence-based decisions. No guesswork, just a clear picture of the risks and whether your protections hold up.

What’s a protection layer?

It’s anything that helps prevent or limit the consequence of a failure. Alarms, trips, shutdown systems, if it’s independent and reliable, it counts.

Do all HAZOP actions need a LOPA?

Not always. We’ll help you decide when it’s worth the extra detail.

Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)

If there’s a risk of explosive atmospheres from gases or vapours, you need a clear, defensible zoning plan. That’s where HAC comes in.

Getting Zoning Right for Flammable Risk Areas

We carry out hazardous area classifications to identify where explosive atmospheres may be present, and for how long.

This informs the type of equipment that can be used and how it should be installed and maintained. Every site is different, so we don’t take a copy-paste approach.

Is HAC a legal requirement?

Yes. It’s part of complying with DSEAR in the UK (and ATEX more widely in Europe).

What’s the output of a HAC study?

A clear report including zone definitions, layouts, basis of classification, and equipment selection advice.
